Nobody Asked, So Don’t Tell

During a congressional hearing yesterday to examine the report of religious tension at the Air Force Academy Rep. Michael Conway, R-Texas, said “I’m a Christian, and Jesus Christ is my personal savior. I hope that didn’t offend you.” No Mr. Conway it does not offend me, but what does offend me is that you feel that it is important that I know this about you. What is even more offensive is that you made this statement while investigating allegations of evangelical members of the Air Force Academy forcing their Christian faith on others with different beliefs. Sir, you seemed to miss the entire point by making your private stance on spirituality public. The motivations of this can be interpreted many ways, one of which is blatant proselytizing, which is extremely disgraceful in your powerful position in our government.

I do not care what religion anyone is and further have no desire to know. A few decades ago the country seemed to respect this very personal and private information. But now, thanks to you, Mr. Conway, and those of your ilk, the quality of life in the US has been steadily eroded by the movement toward a theocratic, Christian-focused country. This is extremely scary and I am ashamed that my country is moving in this direction. What’s worse is that there is no end in sight to this arrogance.
