The Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference

Yesterday I watched a number of presentations that were made at last week’s Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference on C-SPAN. Here are a few observations:

1. Faith only refers to Christians, so this group should be renamed Christianity and Freedom Coalition.

2. This coalition appears to be predominately and almost exclusively old and white.

3. The Republican presidential field for the 2012 nomination is very weak.

4. They should draft Ken Cuccinelli, the AG from Virginia to at least run in the primary. He made a fairly good presentation without falling back on the fire and brimstone religious stuff to get applause.

5. They seem to be reigniting the social issues, hoping to get some of these on state and local ballots in 2012 in order to draw conservatives to the polls. One of the guys said that they need to make sure that the homosexuals do not take marriage away from the heterosexuals, to which he received applause, of course. However, I did not realize that this had become an either-or issue, i.e., if homosexuals are permitted to marry, then heterosexuals will be denied that right. Overall I have never understood why this is an issue to anybody. I think the wedding industry in Iowa, a very red state, is as strong as ever after passing a law to permit same-sex marriage.
